http://www.lonesomebanjochronicles.com/2016/07/the-groove-and-fusion-of-hip-bones-new.html Bad long before The Bad Plus, Hip Bones has been called “renegade jazz,” “psychedelic funk,” and “monsters of the mash-up.” It has been written, “These gentlemen push the boundaries of jazz…and get away with it!” |
Hip Bones’ music combines funk and dub-flavored original instrumentals, along with spirited psychedelic covers from such diverse sources as Jimi Hendrix, The O’Jays, Sting, and Freddie Hubbard. Hip Bones has released three CDs, Threedom, 4, and now The Moose Lodge Sessions. The band recorded the first tracks and drank local moonshine with Grammy-winning engineer/producer Bil VornDick (Bela Fleck, Allison Krauss).

The Moose Lodge Sessions
features guest appearances from legendary soul singer Sidney Barnes, iconic rapper Gift
Of Gab (Blackalicious), Columbia-SC wordsmith Preach Jacobs, and banjo wizard
Andy Pond (Black Mozart Ensemble). See what the media is saying about Hip Bones!
“If you’re into jazz/fusion with some world music twists, you’d be a fool to pass this up.
Hip Bones features the fine saxophone and brilliant flute work of Gary Schwantes,
supported by the melodically funky, loop-infused bass work of Shannon Hoover, and
utterly tasteful grooves of Modern Drummer magazine contributor Robin Tolleson.”
Tad Dickens, Roanoke Times
“Having garnered comparisons to Medeski, Martin & Wood, this North Carolina outfit
comes to Northern California with a jazz that blends funk and rock to create a sound
wedded to the groove and yet totally its own.” Brian McCoy, Oakland Examiner
“Seriously funky jazz from San Francisco, this all-instrumental trio is fronted by hardbopping
saxman Gary Schwantes, who also plays bamboo flutes and keyboard samples,
and is rounded out by South Carolina bassist Shannon Hoover, and drummer Robin
Tolleson. This band is all about deeply textured grooves and tight improv, on material
from the likes of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. They also have a fair amount of cerebral
original material, which can be tastily sampled on the web site. Listen & learn.”
Bill DeYoung, Connect Savannah
“It’s one thing to mash up songs using studio trickery. It’s another to do so onstage with
your bare hands like jazz-funk trio The Hipbones does.” Matt Wake, Metromix
“Grooving, sax-fronted jazz group Hipbones are consistently interesting, yet not overly
slick. Drummer Robin Tolleson’s engaging delivery makes you raise an eyebrow with his
over-the-bar phrasing and perfectly placed duple rolls. He knows how to set up others
too, always lending the right support for Gary Schwantes’ cool sax solos.” Ilya
Stemkovsky, Modern Drummer
“Funky groovesters The Hipbones treads in the same jazzy funk waters as Medeski
Martin & Wood, The Jim Payne Band, and Morphine. If you’re looking to boogie to
some cool instrumental grooves, look no further.” David Brewer, High Country Press
“Psychedelic funk trio The Hipbones combines sax-drenched, jazzy funk grooves and a
healthy dose of loops for a dense, layered sound that will make your head spin and bob
simultaneously.” Shout! Magazine
“Edgy, funky Frisco jazz-rock trio whose members have played with The Dead’s Mickey
Hart and Zappa bandmate Patrick O’Hearn. Known for rearranging Cream, Radiohead,
Sting, and Nirvana.” Connect Savannah
“San Francisco based trio The Hip Bones combine spirited original material with creative
arrangements of popular songs, borrowing from funk, dub, and a variety of other styles.”
